Symptoms of Panic Attacks
Those who experience panic attacks know the terrifying feeling of being out of control of their bodies. Usually the attacks include increased heart rate, heart palpitations, fear of a heart attack, shaking, nausea, and the list goes on. All you want to do is cure panic attacks!
Cause of Panic Attacks
Panic attacks are caused by a release of adrenalin which, in turn, causes the body’s fight-or-flight reflex to kick in. There was a time when our very survival depended on the physiological response that now causes anxiety. These days, we don’t face the kinds of threats for which the fight-or-flight response was intended. Now, our bodies respond to perceived threats with the symptoms of panic attacks and anxiety.
How to Handle A Panic Attack
The fear of another attack can be debilitating and keep them coming. But what can you do in the middle of a panic attack to regain your calm? Here are 5 tips to help you overcome the symptoms when you are in the midst of an anxiety attack:
Tip #1: Focus on your breathing. Breathe in by pulling the air into your stomach. Check your breathing by placing one hand on your chest and one on your stomach. Your belly should expand and contract with each breath and your chest should remain still. Focus as much attention as you can on breathing and let your anxiety symptoms fade into the background.
Tip #2:Listen to the sounds in your surroundings. Truly and intentionally listening to the sounds around you is a way to stay in the moment and quiet your mind. If your mind wanders, just come back to listening. Your mind wants to tell you that you’re in trouble because your body is experiencing adrenalin overload. You’ll be amazed by what you hear when you really listen to all the sounds around you. See if you can pick out individual sounds. Then listen to all the sounds together. Go back and forth between individual sounds and the cacophony of sounds. Your mind will calm and your after about five minutes.
Tip #3: Monitor your self talk. During a panic attack, it’s easy to tell yourself that you are going nuts. Or that you’re dying, having a heart attack, or a nervous breakdown. None of this is true. You are experiencing anxiety and having a panic attack. It is a physiological response to a perceived threat. Tell yourself that you are experiencing a panic attack and that it will only last a short time. There is help available. Just click here: cure anxiety.
Tip #4: Aerobic exercise. Your body is telling you to run. Why not give it what it’s asking for and intentionally create an increased heart rate? Go for a jog, brisk walk, or climb a flight of stairs. Another way to increase your heart rate is lifting your arms above your head and then returning them to your sides repeatedly. Do 25 to 50 repetitions and you’ll feel the increased heart rate that comes with exercise. Intentionally raising your heart rate will burn off the extra adrenalin that is coursing through your body and return your system to normal.
Tip #5: If you are in a situation in which you cannot exercise, try some relaxation techniques. Put all of your attention into each area as you work. Start with your feet and contract and release the muscles. Curl your toes under tightly, then release. Repeat about five times. Next, move on to your calves. Tense and release the muscles there slowly, repeating the process five times. Repeat this process for all large muscle groups, thighs, buttocks, stomach, back, arms, hands. Finally, end with five repetitions of contracting and releasing the muscles in the face.
